Trying to turn backyard shed into rental unit

I moved into a house recently that had a large shed out in the backyard. We renovated the interior. So, now its basically a very hip miniature house. I wanted to run plumbing to the back so that we could make a livable dwelling and rent it out. However, my friend just told me that I should try to get everything permitted, but now the city is trying to shut the entire thing down saying only single families are allowed in my city. I'm upset a bit because I do not think anyone would have said anything had I not alerted the city as I tried to get the permits. I know for a fact other people in this city are leasing out rooms above garages, renovated basements, and converted storage units. Has anyone else ran into this experience or anything like this or can provide guidance?Reply by Alejandro
Hey there from Austin. I totally get your frustration. Zoning laws can be a real pain, especially when the space is otherwise going to just go to waste. I had a similar experience when trying to convert my garage a few years back. you’re gonna have to look into your local laws and see if there’s any way to get a permit for the unit. Not sure where you’re at, but STRs are restricted in so many cities now so be careful if that’s how you were planning on renting your shed. Don’t have much more advice but good luck!

Hey, I totally get your frustration. It’s so annoying to put in all that work only to hit a wall with the city. I haven’t faced this exact issue but I’ve heard that talking to city officials directly can sometimes help clarify things. If you can find out who enforces these rules, maybe they could guide you through the permitting process. Also, documenting other similar projects in your neighborhood could help your case. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted out!
