First late payment from a really good tenant

One of my tenants has always paid on time but this month they're a week late and reached out saying they've had some unexpected expenses come up. They asked if they could split the payment over the next couple of weeks.

I want to be understanding because they've been great, but I also don't want to set a precedent that's hard to walk back.

Has anyone dealt with something similar?

I have not dealt with it from the landlord side but had been in that situation plenty of times as a tenant. I think making sure to talk to them and make sure they are ok and that this isn't a long-term issue (empathetically of course)

We've run into this from time to time. If someone has a strong payment history and communicates before rent becomes a bigger issue, we're usually willing to work with them on a short term plan. The key is documenting the agreement and making it clear it's a one time accommodation and not a new expectation.
